Grain Farmers of Ontario Congratulates the Canadian Government on CETA Anniversary
CETA Celebrates One-Year of Ratification and Success
GUELPH, ON (September 21, 2018) – Grain Farmers of Ontario, the province‘s largest commodity organization, representing Ontario‘s 28,000 barley, corn, oat, soybean and wheat farmers, offers congratulations to the Canadian government on the success of the first year of the CETA trade agreement.
The CETA agreement has helped to open new market doors for Ontario grain throughout the European Union. Ontario corn exports to the European Union continue to rise, and analysts predict that the export numbers will continue to rise. In recent years, Ontario corn production has risen, making the need to find and expand global markets increasingly important.
“CETA has helped diversify markets for Ontario grain farmers and is an excellent example of how strong trade agreements can positively impact our most important economic sectors — including agriculture,” said Markus Haerle, Chair, Grain Farmers of Ontario. “The opportunities that new trade agreements like CETA create are vital for our farmer members.”
The current global trade environment is unpredictable due to ongoing trade talks on NAFTA and trade tariffs being imposed in international marketplaces. The ratification of trade agreements like CETA are imperative to provide certainty to market access for Canadian grains.
