Get ahead of the curve with the Grain Farm Management Program

Grain farmers know about the ups and downs of commodity prices and how difficult they are to deal with. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to take advantage of those swings and put your operation on a firmer financial footing?

This year, the Grain Farm Management Program, offered by the Agri-food Management Institute (AMI), has been specifically designed to meet your needs.

Over the course of five sessions you will learn how to think more strategically, work with cyclical markets, use professional advisors to your best advantage and squeeze every penny out of your assets.

You will work with real-life financials from a case study grain farm, that gives you tools to take home and apply directly to your own farm financials. At the end of the course, you’ll even have a Management Action Plan – tailored to your own operation – that you can implement right away.

If your business is in transition, it’s a great chance to work with the next generation to make sure the operation’s future goes the way everyone wants it to go. And, if you’re developing your business, think about bringing your business partner with you to start creating your strategy for future growth.

The course consists of five sessions starting in November and ending in February in Ingersoll, Ontario, and Grain Farmers of Ontario will even subsidize your travel costs.

Production resources available for growers

Originally released in September 2014, the Guide to Early Season Field Crop Pests is a field guide for Ontario farmers and crop advisors to learn more about early season soil insects and management recommendations. The publication was funded jointly by Grain Farmers of Ontario and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA).

A limited number of print copies were available when the guide was first launched. Grain Farmers of Ontario has recently received additional print copies, which are now available to farmer-members. To request a print copy in English or French, please contact Natalie DiMeo, Research Coordinator. An electronic copy is available for free download in our Production Resources section. For the French language edition, contact web@gfo.ca.

Also available in both print and electronic versions is Identifying Wheat Diseases Affecting Heads and Grain. Please note that this publication is only available in English.

Download the 2016 Risk Management Program Calculator

The 2016 Risk Management Program (RMP) calculator is now available. You can download it here.

Ontario’s RMP helps producers manage risks beyond their control, like fluctuating costs and market prices. The program is administered by Ontario’s farm business risk management agency, Agricorp. For more information about enrolling in RMP, program dates and other resources, please visit Agricorp’s RMP for Grains and Oilseed site.

The RMP calculator is designed to help growers calculate the value of enrolling in the program. The calculator is based on both known figures (support prices, premiums) and producers own estimates of their expected harvest prices. Final results may differ.
