4 Barley in Ontario BARLEY PRODUCTION IN Ontario is relatively small compared to other grain commodities. On average, 113,000 metric tonnes are grown on 91,000 acres each year and all of it is used for domestic purposes. Animal feed is the main market utilizing 60% of total demand — mainly for beef and dairy cattle. Animal feed has been declining since 2016 as production has declined. Food for human consumption and pet food are two other important markets with 37% of total demand going into these markets. Food includes de-hulled, pearled, toasted, and barley flakes. There is also a small percentage used for seed (4%).
