8 Oats in Ontario OAT PRODUCTION is relatively small compared to other grains grown in Ontario. Production levels have remained stable around 74,000 metric tonnes on 75,000 acres for the past six years. Domestic usage makes up the largest market for Ontario oats, consuming 64% of total demand. Food for human consumption is the largest domestic market segment, making up 27% of total demand. Most oats are ground into flakes and flours for use in cereals and cereal bars. The majority of these oats are grown in Northern Ontario where the climatic conditions produce a higher quality oat more suitable for the milling industry. Pet food and horse feed make up 16% of total demand. Horse feed is a premium market for Ontario oats. Animal feed for beef and dairy calves accounts for a further 17% of the total demand. Exports account for 36% of total oat demand.
