Grain Farmers of Ontario congratulates Canadian Government on CUSMA signing

GUELPH, ON (December 13, 2019) – GUELPH, ON (December 13, 2019) – Grain Farmers of Ontario, the province‘s largest commodity organization, representing Ontario‘s 28,000 barley, corn, oat, soybean, and wheat farmers today offers congratulations to Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for signing the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). The agreement updates the former North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The agreement will now be tabled in the House of Commons for ratification, although no timing has been announced.

“We welcome more stability and certainty for the North American markets and are pleased to see the government of Canada successfully reach agreement with Mexico and the U.S.,” said Markus Haerle, Chair, Grain Farmers of Ontario. “Our relationships with Mexico and the U.S. are vital to the prosperity of the Ontario grain industry and this agreement will provide stability that will benefit grain farmers across Ontario.”

Grain Farmers of Ontario urges the government to avoid delays and bring the agreement to the house before the holiday break and urges the opposition parties to also support this, so as not to jeopardize the agreement.

Grain farmers in Ontario produce the majority of the country‘s corn and soybeans, which are used domestically and internationally in food production, bio-fuel production and alcohol. Ontario grain farming currently provides $18 billion in economic output to the province.
