Cover Crops, October 2018 Update

Across the province there seems to have been a great amount of cover crops planted this summer/fall with good growth in most areas. Some of them might have been planted as an extra forage source for cattle, with hay production being a bit uncertain at times this year, but overall cover crops are looking good.

If you are interested in learning more about cover crops, there is a great website and app available that uses Ontario data: the Midwest Cover Crop Tool. You can use it to select appropriate cover corps for your county, soil type and what you hope the cover to do for your land, among other things.

There are also some field days coming up shortly specifically on grazing and cover crops. The locations are Omemme Thursday October 25, Neustadt Saturday October 27 or Chatham Saturday November 10. All events run from 9am-12:30pm and include lunch. Pre-registration is required by emailing ag.info.omafra@ontario.ca This event is partially hosted by Grain Farmers of Ontario.
